Nederlands openlucht museum
A fun and educational day out! That’s how you’ll look back on your day at the Dutch Open Air Museum. This is the place where history comes to life. Take a stroll through the history of the Netherlands in an extensive, 44-hectares museum park. There are lots of different activities at the Open Air Museum all year round. Entertain yourself with a wide range of historic workshops, crafts, tours, events and presentations. Enjoy freshly baked ‘poffertjes’ or take a ride on one of the old trams.
Special buildings brought to life
From an authentic peat cabin to a pub and a genuine boatyard. At the museum you will find around 100 Dutch historic buildings, farmhouses and mills. Not only can these be viewed from the outside, but you can also step inside for a look around. You’ll meet the enthusiastic members of the museum team, who you can ask anything about Dutch culture and history. This brings you closer to former times and gives you the chance to experience the past again. Come and see the blacksmith, fisherman or visit a traditional baker.
Around and between the buildings in the Dutch Open Air Museum you will also find different gardens: cultivated plants, forgotten vegetables, medicinal plants and herbs. These gardens, and the museum buildings, are situated in a vast, green museum park.
The Canon of Dutch History
Nothing is as changeable as Dutch weather. Which is why, fortunately, there’s also an indoor museum situated in the Dutch Open Air Museum. Travel through time in the ‘Canon of Dutch History’ presentation. Catch your own food in the prehistoric period and trade with international powerhouses. Oh, and don’t forget to arrive on the platform on time. Aletta Jacobs will be waiting for you there for a first-class train ride!
